A digital estate map is a working view of the people, assets, systems, providers, and decisions that connect a family’s private life. It is useful because it shows relationships that separate device lists and vendor reports usually miss.
Start with the protection circle
List the principal, family members, household staff, assistants, property teams, and trusted advisors whose access or exposure could affect the estate. Record the role each person plays without collecting sensitive material that is not necessary for the mapping decision.
Add places, systems, and providers
Next, identify residences, offices, aircraft, vehicles, connected-home systems, devices, domains, accounts, vendors, and recurring travel arrangements. The map should show where a person, system, or provider connects to another part of the estate.

Record decisions and permissions
A map becomes operational when it records who can decide, who can act, what information is shared, and how long access lasts. Client-controlled permissions and documented handoffs reduce the chance that coordination creates a new concentration of risk.
Keep it current
The estate changes as people join or leave the household, properties change hands, vendors are replaced, and new systems are adopted. A quarterly review or another agreed cadence keeps the map useful instead of turning it into a historical document.
The map should support decisions
A useful output is not merely a diagram. It may pair the estate map with an ownership register showing the responsible person, decision-maker, information boundary, current status, and next action for each meaningful exposure or dependency.
